Ignition Interlock Devices

DUI Defense Lawyers Serving Worcester, Massachusetts

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a portable breath test device that is used to test a driver's blood alcohol concentration. About the size of a cell phone, this device is attached to the vehicle and connected to the ignition. Unless the driver provides a breath alcohol sample that has an alcohol content of less than .02%, the vehicle will not start. Repeat DUI offenders in Massachusetts are required to have ignition interlock devices installed in all vehicles they may own, operate, or lease.

The mandatory installation of ignition interlock devices in the vehicles of repeat DUI offenders is a relatively new requirement, brought about by the implementation of Melanie's Law.

Do you have questions about IIDs and whether you may be required to install one of these in your vehicle? Call (888) 456-ARREST today to speak with an experienced Worcester DUI Lawyer at the Massachusetts DUI Defense Group. We return calls 24/7 and take appointments every day of the week, even on Sundays.

How Ignition Interlock Devices Work

A vehicle that has an IID installed will not start unless a "clean" breath sample is provided by the driver. After successfully starting the vehicle, the driver will then be required to take "rolling retests" while on the road. The IID will emit an audible signal that indicates that the driver has only 5 minutes to pull over and take the test or to take the test while driving. If the driver provides a breath sample that has a blood alcohol level of .02% or greater, the vehicle will shut off and twill not start again until a new breath sample is given that passes the test.

Avoid an IID - Consult a Worcester DUI Attorney Today!

Ignition interlock devices are notorious for showing faulty results. If you would like to find out how to avoid having an IID installed in your vehicle in the first place, it is important that you have a DUI Defense Attorney at your side to help you challenge your drunk driving charges. Avoiding a conviction for a second, third or subsequent OUI/DUI in the first place will eliminate this requirement.
